AFTERCARE
DermShield (Second-Skin) Bandage
This method uses a medical-grade transparent film that acts like a breathable “second skin.” (DermShield is my brand of choice)
How It Works & Benefits
It locks in plasma, prevents scabbing, and shields against bacteria while still being waterproof and breathable.
Because it adheres well, the tattoo isn’t exposed to external contaminants during critical early healing.
The client can shower as usual (mild exposure to water) without removing it.
It reduces the frequency of washes and ointment application.
How Long to Keep It On
The bandage can stay on for 1–3 days, depending on healing and how well it’s adhered.
Do not exceed 3 days for any single piece.
If fluid buildup becomes excessive, or the film starts to peel, you may remove early.
Removal of bandage
Best done under warm running water (like in the shower) to loosen adhesive.
Pull slowly, back over itself—not outward. Use gentle pressure; don’t yank.
After removal, clean with mild soap (non-scented) and pat (gently) dry with paper towels.
Additional Information:
If irritation, redness beyond normal, or signs of infection appear, remove the film and consult a medical professional.
Clients allergic to adhesives may not tolerate DermShield; please let me know and we can go the traditional wrap method.
Traditional Plastic Wrap
The tattoo has been wrapped with plastic wrap to protect it from bacteria, dirt, and friction while the initial healing process begins. The wrap should remain on for approximately 2–4 hours, or as directed. Do not leave the wrap on for more than 6 hours, as the skin needs to breathe.
Removal
With clean hands, gently remove plastic wrap and dispose of immediately.
After removal, clean with mild soap (non-scented) and pat (gently) dry with paper towels.
AFTERCARE TIMELINE (Both second-skin and traditional wrap)
Days 1-3
After cleaning, apply a very thin layer of unscented ointment (such as Aquaphor or Hustlebutter) two to three times daily.
The tattoo should appear lightly moisturized, not glossy or greasy.
Excess moisture can irritate the skin or lead to small pimples, so use ointment sparingly.
Always wash hands before applying any product.
Days 4-14
Switch from ointment to a fragrance-free lotion (such as Lubriderm, CeraVe, or Eucerin).
Continue to gently wash the tattoo once or twice daily with mild soap.
Peeling and light flaking are normal during this stage. Do not pick, scratch, or peel the tattoo.
Apply lotion as needed to keep the skin hydrated but not overly moist.
Activities to Avoid
Do not submerge the tattoo in water (baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, or saunas) for at least two weeks.
Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds until the tattoo is fully healed (typically three to four weeks).
Do not rewrap the tattoo or cover it with plastic wrap after the initial application.
Avoid Vaseline, Neosporin, and scented lotions, as these products can cause irritation or fading.
Healing Timeline
Days 1–3: Tattoo may feel warm, tight, or slightly sore.
Days 4–10: Peeling and flaking may occur; this is part of normal healing.
Days 10–20: Skin may appear cloudy or dull as deeper layers continue to heal.
Fully healed: Typically occurs within 2–4 weeks, depending on skin type and tattoo placement.
After the tattoo is fully healed (Generally 4-6 weeks later)
Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect against fading and sun damage.
Keep the skin moisturized regularly to maintain the appearance and longevity of the tattoo.
